Rig guide
The zig rig: how to catch carp off the bottom
A zig rig is a long, fine hooklink with a floating bait, usually a piece of foam, that suspends the hook anywhere from a foot under the surface to just above the lakebed. Carp often feed and cruise mid-water, especially in warm, windy or high-pressure conditions. When nothing is coming to bottom baits, a zig set to the depth the fish are cruising at will often catch them.

The basic zig set-up
Use a lead clip or helicopter set-up, a long hooklink of fine low-diameter mono (8 to 12lb), a small wide-gape hook (size 8 to 10) and a piece of zig foam or a floater on a hair. Many anglers start with the hooklink at roughly three-quarters of the water depth, then move up or down.
- Hooklink: low-diameter mono, 8–12lb
- Hook: size 8–10, wide gape
- Bait: zig foam (black, yellow or red), or a buoyant boilie
- Lead: 2–3oz on a safe lead clip
Finding the right depth
This is the whole game with zigs. Watch where fish are showing and for how long they stay up. If you have two rods out, fish them at different depths, then move both to whichever depth gets the first bite. Check the depth with a marker float or by counting the lead down.
When zigs out-fish bottom baits
Zigs shine when carp are cruising: warm sunny days, high pressure, strong winds stacking fish at one end, and in winter when carp hang in the warmer upper layers on mild days. They're also useful on pressured waters where every bottom spot is full of rigs.
Fishing zigs safely
Long hooklinks need a set-up where the lead drops off easily if you snap off. Strike at small movements, because carp often move only a short way on a zig before dropping it. Many fisheries set a maximum zig length or ban zigs altogether, so always check the rules first.
Common questions
- What colour zig foam is best?
- Black is a strong all-rounder in bright conditions because it shows up against the sky. Yellow and red work well in coloured water. Carry all three and switch if nothing happens.
- How long should a zig rig be?
- Start at about three-quarters of the water depth, then adjust to where the fish are showing. Some fisheries cap zig length, so check the rules.
- Do zigs work in winter?
- Yes. On mild, bright winter days carp often sit high in the water, and a short zig fished a few feet below the surface can be the only rig that gets a bite.
