Surface fishing for carp

Surface fishing means feeding floating baits, usually dog-biscuit mixers or bread, until carp are confidently taking them off the top, then casting a floating hookbait among them on a controller float. It works best on warm, bright, calm-to-breezy days from late spring to early autumn. For many anglers it's the most exciting way to catch carp.

The set-up

Fish a surface controller float on 10–12lb mono, with 4 to 6 feet of fine hooklink (6–10lb) and a size 8–12 wide-gape hook. On the hair, use a cork ball, a foam mixer or a real mixer.

Get them feeding first

Catapult a steady trickle of mixers upwind so they drift over the fish. Wait until several carp are taking them confidently before you cast. If you cast too early, you'll spook them.

Hooking them

Wait until the hookbait goes down and the line tightens before you strike. If you lift too early, you'll pull the bait out of the carp's mouth. Keep the line greased so it floats, except the last foot near the hook.

Common questions

What is the best surface bait for carp?
Dog-biscuit mixers are cheap and very effective. Bread crust is excellent in the margins. Soak mixers in a little oil for extra attraction.
When is the best time for surface fishing?
Warm, bright days from May to September, especially afternoons when carp are cruising high in the water.
Do all fisheries allow surface fishing?
Most do, but some ban floating baits or controllers. Always check the rules.
