Carp fishing bivvies: what you actually need

A bivvy is a carp angler's shelter for overnight and long sessions. For most anglers, a one-man dome bivvy with an overwrap is the right choice: it's warm and dry, quick to set up, and light enough to carry round a lake. If you only fish days, a brolly is enough. Two-man bivvies are for when you share a swim or fish long sessions.

Brolly, one-man or two-man?

Choose the smallest one that fits your bedchair and gear. You'll move swims more often if your shelter is light.

  • Brolly or brolly system: light and fast, for day sessions and short overnighters
  • One-man bivvy: a warm, quick-pitch shelter for nights
  • Two-man bivvy: space for gear and a friend, but heavy

Features worth paying for

An overwrap for winter condensation, a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm or more for heavy rain, storm poles and good pegs for wind, and a groundsheet or mozzi panels for summer.

Check before you night fish

Not every fishery allows night fishing or bivvies. Check the listing and confirm with the fishery before you book an overnighter.

Common questions

Do I need a bivvy for carp fishing?
Only for overnight or long sessions. For day sessions, a brolly or no shelter at all is fine.
What is the best size bivvy?
A one-man bivvy suits most anglers. Make sure it fits your bedchair with room for a bag and a cooking area.
How do I stop condensation in a bivvy?
Use an overwrap, keep the door partly open for air and avoid cooking inside.
